PERSONALITY

Sam has a strong sense of loyalty to those he calls friend. He also feels obligated to help others in need and is very compassionate. It is his friend and, specifically, Steve that motivates most of Sam's choices. He trusts Steve with his life and possibly more and that dictates most of his actions. Before Steve was around though, I would say Sam was motivated by his need to be helpful to other people and serve them to the best of his ability if he felt they needed him.

Sam Wilson is not just all business and being helpful. He also has a sense of humor that, in a way, keeps him grounded when everything seems to be going to hell. Even when a building nearly falls on him, Sam is quick with a joke. Sam takes things in stride and doesn't seem to be phased by things easily (Captain America joins me for a jog? Sure. Why not?). Sam does not concern himself much with problems on a personal level because he has seen the suffering that goes on in the world and he's lost people of his own. Life's too short to be worried about the little things and you have to enjoy it.

You get the sense from Sam that because he lost his wingman, Riley, that he used to be a lot cockier and gung-ho about things. However, now he's matured and realizes just how brutal combat and war can be. It was a pivotal moment in his life and one that has had a strong impact on his character and how he behaves, especially towards friends. He is cautious and careful, but also protective and will do whatever he can to support and help those that turn to him for it. He doesn't want to see others hurt, but he'll be the first to follow someone into a fight if they need his support.

He's straight-forward and not one to beat around the bush. He doesn't hint to Steve that he wants to help him, he flat out asks directly. He doesn't ask to join the Avengers but shows up at their new base with his new wings and ready to train to help Steve. He takes what he does seriously and isn't afraid to fight the whole world if he has to.

Sam is also competitive. He's only human, but he still keeps jogging when Steve laps him several times. He pushes himself to be the best and doesn't back down from a challenge or turn tail and run. When asked to be a test pilot for the EXO-7 Falcon he stepped right up to the plate. He's adaptable too. This helps in those situations when you're thrown into the unknown and Sam's life seems to be full of unknowns at the moment. He doesn't let things get him down for long and is always pushing forward.
